This is going to be relatively short, as my normal feeds were quiet with stuff I wanted to share.

Let’s start with a case of fraud.

From USA Today, we have an article about the feds prosecuting a “college” for selling fake nursing diplomas. From the article:

According to the OIG, the scheme general worked in three parts:

Recruiters helped aspiring nurses obtain the fake degrees and transcripts

Fraudulent degrees qualified recipients to take the national nursing board exam.

After passing the exam, they became eligible to become licensed in several states, where they eventually found jobs as licensed nurses.

And now a fraud of a different type.

From ProPublica, we have a story about prosecutors using bad science to convict 911 callers of lying. This is why I dread having to do jury duty again (yeah, I got a summons). I’ll have to explain to my fellow jurors how much of the CSI stuff they see on TV is so much bullshit.

And the downstream effect of fraud in the NRA.

This is a video put out by Logan Metesh of the High Caliber History podcast. I heard him describe the shenanigans on the Assorted Caliber Podcast. TLDR: the Finance Committee of the NRA Board just gave WLP the ability to sell off the pieces in the NRA Museum. You know, to cover his – I mean, the organization’s – legal difficulties.

And a little bit more bad news.

From IDC, we have news that global smartphone shipments have seen historic drops. The article says weakening demand and high inventories contributed to the drops, which was across the board from the major players in the market. More indications that the tech sector is undergoing a major realignment.

Some good news please?

Well, from War Is Boring, we have the story of a fighter pilot in Korea finally getting the Navy Cross after fifty years. The full story was kept quiet because the dude went up against seven Soviet MiGs and took out four – and no one wanted to admit a dogfight between American and Soviet fighters. It’s good to see him get the recognition such a feat deserves.
